Spray Foam Insulation
High-performance thermal insulation for walls, roofs, attics, and industrial buildings. Seamless, air-tight, energy-efficient.
Why Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) Is the Standard for High-Performance Insulation
Spray polyurethane foam is the only insulation type that combines air sealing, thermal insulation, and moisture control in a single application. Pioneer JYYJ high-pressure plural-component machines (25–36 MPa) deliver consistent cell structure across closed-cell (40–50 kg/m³, R-6.5/inch) and open-cell (8–10 kg/m³, R-3.7/inch) systems — covering residential retrofits, commercial new builds, agricultural barns, industrial cold-weather facilities, and metal buildings.
Compared to fiberglass batts, SPF achieves 35–50% higher whole-wall R-value because it eliminates thermal bridging and air infiltration losses. Compared to cellulose, it doesn't settle over time. With proper machine calibration and substrate prep, an SPF system installed today carries its R-value for 50+ years without degradation.
Warning Signs Your Building Needs SPF Insulation
SPF retrofit becomes urgent — not optional — when buildings show these symptoms. Energy waste compounds: every winter without proper insulation costs 30–50% more on heating bills than a building with SPF would have.
Common Uses of SPF Across Application Sectors
Residential Retrofit
Attic floor, knee walls, rim joists, basement walls. Closed-cell 50mm typical. Payback 24–36 months on energy savings.
Commercial New Build
Steel frame walls + flat roof systems. Closed-cell 75–100mm. IECC 2021 / ASHRAE 90.1 compliant in single application.
Agricultural Barns
Livestock barns, poultry houses, dairy facilities. Closed-cell 50–75mm with vapor barrier. Withstands washdown chemicals.
Cold Storage & Freezer
−20°F to −40°F service. Closed-cell 100–150mm. R-value retention verified per ASTM D2126 cycling.
Metal Building Roofs
Direct-to-metal closed-cell over purlin systems. Eliminates condensation drip + adds R-30+ in single application.
Industrial Process Pipe
Hot pipe (steam / process water) + cold pipe (refrigeration). Closed-cell 25–50mm wraps for thermal + condensation control.

The 6 Advantages of SPF Over Alternative Insulation
Three SPF Material Systems — Choose by Application
Not all SPF is created equal. The right chemistry depends on your service environment, code requirements, and budget.
- Closed-Cell HFO-Blown (40–50 kg/m³, R-6.5/inch) — Premium choice for roofs, foundations, cold storage, exterior walls in cold climate. HFO blowing agent is low-GWP, EPA SNAP compliant, Canadian F-Gas compliant. Slightly higher material cost ($1.20–1.80/board-foot) but lowest lifecycle energy cost.
- Open-Cell HFO-Blown (8–10 kg/m³, R-3.7/inch) — Cost-effective interior wall + ceiling insulation. Open-cell is sound-damping (50–80% airborne sound reduction), vapor-permeable (good for hot-humid climates where wall cavities need to dry to interior), and lighter material consumption per board-foot.
- Hybrid Two-Pass Systems — 1-inch closed-cell (vapor / air barrier) + 5–6 inches open-cell (cost-effective fill). Used in mixed-humid climate zones where you want the air seal + moisture control of closed-cell but the budget efficiency of open-cell for the bulk fill. Code-compliant in most jurisdictions.
Pioneer JYYJ machines are formulation-agnostic — the same rig sprays all three systems. Choice of material is independent of equipment selection.

Frequently Asked Questions
How thick should spray foam insulation be?
Walls: 50–75mm closed-cell (R-3 to R-5 climate zone) or 100mm in cold climates. Roofs: 100–150mm closed-cell. Attics: 200mm open-cell. Cold storage: 100–150mm closed-cell with thermal break. Code minimums vary — IECC 2021 climate zone 6 needs R-30 ceiling (~100mm closed-cell). Always verify with local code authority before bid.
Open-cell vs closed-cell — which one do I need?
Closed-cell (40–50 kg/m³): Roofs, foundations, exterior walls, cold storage, flood zones. Higher R/inch, vapor barrier, structural rigidity. Open-cell (8–10 kg/m³): Interior walls, ceilings, sound damping. Vapor permeable (good for hot-humid where walls need to dry inward). Lower cost. Some projects use both — closed-cell exterior + open-cell interior cavity fill.
What's the difference between 25 MPa pneumatic and 36 MPa hydraulic machines?
25 MPa pneumatic (JYYJ-3H / Q300): adequate for residential SPF, small commercial, contractor starter. 2–10 kg/min output. 36 MPa hydraulic (JYYJ-H600 / H600PK / H800 / H-V8T): required for polyurea, cold-weather work below –10°C, high-density closed-cell (50+ kg/m³), and high-throughput crews. 2–15 kg/min output. If you spray polyurea or operate in winter, 36 MPa is non-negotiable.
Can I spray foam in cold weather?
Below 5°C substrate temperature, foam adhesion fails and cure suffers. Workarounds: (1) pre-heat substrate with propane heaters; (2) use heated-hose machine (JYYJ-H600PK or H-V8T deliver 38–66°C material at gun); (3) winter-grade A-side chemistry. For –20°C ambient projects (Siberia, Canada, Russia), heated hose is mandatory, not optional.
How many m² per day can a 2-person crew spray?
Average 200–400 m²/day depending on substrate complexity, foam thickness, and machine output. Bare walls + 50mm closed-cell = 350–400 m²/day with JYYJ-H600 class. Roof with penetrations + 150mm = 150–200 m²/day. JYYJ-H800 high-output crews running open layouts hit 600–800 m²/day. Logistics (transfer pump, drum changeout, substrate prep) consume 30–40% of shift time.
What's the payback period on SPF retrofit vs fiberglass?
Residential cold climate retrofit: 24–36 months on heating savings alone (30–50% reduction). Commercial: 12–24 months when factoring HVAC equipment downsizing. Cold storage: 18 months from refrigeration load reduction. Insurance discount on flood-resistant Class 5 material adds another 5–8% in flood zones. Lifetime cost (50 years) is 40–60% lower than fiberglass cycles.
Does the foam need a fire barrier?
Yes. IRC R314 requires a 15-minute thermal/ignition barrier over SPF in conditioned spaces. Options: (1) ½-inch gypsum board (most common); (2) ICC-ES approved intumescent coating (DC315, Andek 2WB); (3) ¼-inch hardboard. Cold storage, attics with no human access, and equipment rooms have exceptions — check local code. Approved intumescent coatings let you spray + paint without drywall, fast track for cold storage / equipment rooms.
How long until I can occupy a sprayed space?
Tack-free: 30 seconds. Trim-able: 2 hours. Full cure for safe occupancy: 24 hours. Off-gassing window: 24–72 hours with ventilation. HVAC systems should be off during spray + 4 hours after. Crews wear full PPE (Tyvek suits, supplied-air respirators). Customers / occupants stay out until 24 hours past last pass.
Is the equipment difficult to operate?
Modern PLC-equipped machines (JYYJ-H600PK / H-V8T with 10-inch touchscreen) are operable after 2–3 days of training for new crews. Manual button-control machines (JYYJ-3H / Q300 / H600 / H800) require deeper chemistry intuition — typically 1–2 weeks for crew leads to dial in. Pioneer provides Russian / Spanish / English commissioning support + reference SOPs. Most chemistry issues stem from drum temperature variation, not machine fault — focus operator training on raw material handling.
Can SPF replace fiberglass + housewrap + vapor barrier?
Yes. Closed-cell SPF is an air barrier, vapor retarder, and insulation in a single application — eliminating the need for separate housewrap and vapor barrier in most code jurisdictions (verify IRC R702.7 in your zone). This is one of the biggest labor savings in SPF retrofit — 3 trades collapsed into 1 spray crew. Open-cell SPF is vapor-permeable and may still need a Class III vapor retarder in cold climates — closed-cell does not.

Technical Considerations
- Density selection: 40–50 kg/m³ for structural roofs and below-grade; 8–10 kg/m³ for interior walls and ceilings
- Substrate prep: must be clean, dry, dust-free, and above 5°C surface temperature for proper adhesion
- Recommended thickness: 50–100mm for walls, 150–200mm for roofs and attics depending on climate zone
- Voltage matching: confirm 220V single-phase or 380V three-phase before order — electrical specs are non-trivial
- Ignition barrier required per IRC R314 — typically ½-inch gypsum board or ICC-ES approved intumescent coating
- Ventilation during application: spray crews need PPE and project area must be evacuated until cure (~24h)
- Climate window: ambient temperature 5–35°C, RH below 85%, no rain or condensation on substrate
- Storage of A/B components: 15–25°C, sealed drums, use within 6 months of manufacture
- Mix ratio calibration: 1:1 by volume (typical) — drift over 5% causes friability or sticky cure
- Hose temperature setting: 38–66°C depending on chemistry and ambient, heated hose 15–30m typical
